1) Yosemite Rose B&B is 16 miles from the highway 120 entrance to Yosemite National Park.
2) Yosemite National Park covers 1,100 square miles and is larger than the State of Rhode Island. The Park has 550 miles of highway and 1200 miles of hiking trails. The highway 120 entrance on the west side of the Park is at 5,000 feet and exits the Park at 10,000 feet (Tioga Pass) connecting to highway 395 on the Nevada side. A steep decent drops down to highway 395.
3) The Park is in the Stanislaus National Wilderness which covers 40,000 square miles. Yosemite Rose is on the western edge of the wilderness area 2 miles off highway 120.
4) A million years ago Yosemite was volcanic erupting with lava flows over a wide area. The Yosemite Rose is built on an old lava flow. Then 6,000 years ago the movement of the ice glaciers eroded the volcanoes, and cut the magnificent Yosemite National Park Valley including Half-Dome.
The Valley sits on a solidified lava pool that has turned into granite rock, 60 miles wide and 60 miles deep. El Capitan is the largest granite monolith in the world. It is larger than the Rock-of-Gibraltar. The actions of the glaciers exposed the El Capitan, a finger of granite, which goes down 60 miles into the earth.
Dormant volcanoes exist in the Mammoth Lake region south of the Park. They still rumble and shake every once in a while.
5a) The Yosemite National Park Valley is roughly 7 miles long and a mile wide. Three (3) waterfalls drop into the valley forming the head waters to the Merced River which flows through the Valley. Several hiking trails start from the Valley floor. The Village (small town) is at the far end of the Valley has a small grocery store providing sandwiches.
5b) The Valley floor is where most guests spent their time. You need a week to see the whole park.
5c) The Awanhee Hotel near the Village was built in 1930. Worth walking through it or dining there.
6) There is a free shuttle bus service that cycles the Valley floor with many bus stops. We recommend parking in the Village and using the shuttle bus service that comes by about every 20 minutes or so. The bus stops at all the trail heads.
7) The Yosemite Rose is a 220 acre ranch which grazes Black Angus and a few horses. The land is dry and arid during the summer; and, wet and green during the winter. Drought conditions exist during the summer months; as a result, the landscape irrigation is minimal.
8) The stable is used to store alfalfa during the summer, horses during the winter or injured animals.
9) Yosemite Rose well water is pure and crystal clear. Feel free to drink from the tap.
10) The Yosemite Rose main building is a 2 story Italianate Victorian built between 1999 and 2001. It is built on an old volcanic lava flow. The Rose has 7 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms, and 6 public rooms which include Library, Parlor, Billiard room, Dining room, large Kitchen, and utility rooms with laundry for house cleaning only.
11) The 2 story cottage was remodeled in 1999. Most of the beams were milled on site. Upstairs: 1 double bed, 2 twin beds, a bath room. Down stairs: 1 bedroom with queen bed, kitchen, cloths washer, bath tub & shower, TV. Great for families.
12) Breakfast is not served in the cottage, for it has a complete kitchen. However, breakfast can be purchased in the Yosemite Rose Main building (The B&B part). Ask.
13) Yosemite Rose Breakfast is served from 8-9 am on the B&B’s veranda or in the dining room. Take-out breakfasts may be obtained for those early birds that want to get to the Park. A take-out breakfast must be requested the night before. Ask us.
14) Power outages do occur fairly often here. Yosemite Rose has stand by gasoline generators on both the Rose B&B and the cottage, with a large generator on the well pump system.
15) The wild life animals and birds are black and brown bears, mountain lions, coyotes, foxes, deer, wild turkeys, hawks and buzzards with 48 species of birds and 7 varieties of owls.
16) Keep your gas tank filled by always topping off. Two (2) gas stations on highway 120, a couple miles west of Groveland. Another (1) station just before the highway 120 entrance to the Park.
17) During the summer, most nights allow for great viewing of the Milky Way galaxy star system. Tens of thousands of star systems (other sun’s with planets orbiting them) are twinkling in the night sky. Did you know that there are 1.5 trillion star systems circling the Milky Way; and, that our sun system orbits the Milky Way every 250 million years. A hug black hole resides at its center. Yosemite Rose provides lounge chairs for night viewing.
18) Seasonal temperatures in Fahrenheit: Winter 45 deg, Summer 85 deg (July can hit 105 deg). Winter can bring snow and ice. In 2023, the Rose had 6 feet of snow. Beware, the ice on driveways and roads can be dangerous. Walk in the snow.
19) The county seat, Sonora, is one hour from here were most shopping is done. The hospital (Seven Adventist) with a good emergency room, is in Sonora. Groveland has a small (but adequate grocery store). Ask us.
20) Eating out: Groveland (10 miles from the Rose) has several eating establishments that range from Mexican, Saloon, Pizza, and Country Club dining. Buck Meadow (7 miles from the Rose on highway 120) has 2 eating establishments. Ask us.
